Does our LGBT+ community have a history? Yes, we do! But how can we go about researching and telling our stories?

You are warmly invited to attend a workshop and informational meeting with Dr. Gregory Rosenthal, Assistant Professor of Public History at Roanoke College, to discuss the possibility of starting up a Roanoke LGBT History Project.

Please note that this is not an RDC program or initiative. The RDC is gladly acting as host for this event and will help Mr. Rosenthal as needed. We welcome and celebrate his interest and passion to help our community by leading this unique project. To Gregory we say.. Thank you!

This workshop and meeting will last for two hours. In the first thirty minutes we will get to know one another, and Prof. Rosenthal will share examples of successful community-based LGBT history projects in other cities and communities across the United States.

Then we will do collaborative brainstorming for the remainder of our time to come up with potential projects. These might include, but are not limited to: conducting oral histories of LGBT life, community, and activism in previous generations; collecting and creating a digital archive of old newsletters, pamphlets, photographs, and other memorabilia; organizing an exhibit, or publishing a book, about our history; and so much more!

No prior experience with or knowledge of LGBT history is required. Just bring a passion for researching and telling our community's stories, and we will go from there!
